History Of Litchfield

The Litchfield Council is a local government area in Northern Territory, based on the eastern and south-eastern outskirts of the Darwin-Palmerston area. The council was established by the Northern Territory Government on the 6th of September 1985. The original inhabitants of the Litchfield region were the Woolner, Larrakia and Djowei Aboriginal people. European settlers arrived in 1864.

Litchfield is named after Frederick Henry Litchfield, who, alongside William Patrick Auld, was a member of a settlement and survey party who were tasked with exploring areas of the NT, from Escape Cliffs in Van Diemen Gulf to the Daly River.

Today, Litchfield has over 8,000 rateable properties, 614 kilometres of sealed roads, 109 kilometres of unsealed roads and 7 kilometres of dedicated bike paths. At Litchfield VIP Tours, we provide group and private tours from Darwin to Litchfield National Park.
